from Shayna Held, Volunteer Coordinator for Volvo Ocean Race Miami:
The Volvo Ocean Race is the most prestigious global ocean sailing race and has been in existence for 37 years. The 2011/2012 edition began October 2011 in Alicante, Spain. This extreme journey of man and vessel, on the world's most treacherous oceans, goes beyond water when it makes its landfall in Miami on May 6th through May 20th, 2012. Out of the 10 ports around the world, Miami is the only North America stopover.
The Volvo Ocean Race Miami Inc. is a non-profit Foundation who's goal is to provide grants for water-related activities, impact and educate our youth through sailing, water sports, and educational directives, preserve our water and oceans, and promote water sports access for people with disabilities.
The Miami stopover is a two week long festival happening May 6-20th at the Bicentennial Park. Exciting activities will be happening during the course of the festival combining music, food, art and family in a festival environment. We are looking for volunteers in every area of the festival including, but not limited to, reception assistants, hospitality assistants, info booth greeters, logistics assistance, as well as helpers at each activation around the venue.
